51 of last year's Fluffiest tracks, all in a nice neat little list

21 February, 2014

Some people can come up with lists immediately. For others, the path is long, winding and full of Daft Thicke infused temptation.

By Nixxie,

Yes yes yes, we're well into 2014, and a list of last year's top tunes seems a little late at this post-valentine's-spring-is-round-the-corner stage of the year. But things like this just cannot be rushed. It takes time to figure out what your musical highlights from a whole YEAR are. Well it took ME a lot of time anyway.

OK so this time round I'ma do this a little differently. For starters, instead of just throwing out a straight-up list of the 50 tracks I enjoyed the most in 2013, I've decided to a) go for 54 (ha) and b) to also give you some insight into why I chose them. What made me smile/cry/laugh/dance/headbang/incite the crowd/feel better about everything.

Furthermore I feel like starting this one from top to bottom. So I'll be starting with my numero uno #1 favorite track released in 2013.

And since I'm feeling particularly generous, you can also grab the whole playlist off of my spotify too:

Enjoy!

1. HAUSCH - ANDHIM

I was totally blown away by this ultra smooth dancefloor filler right from the first time I came across it. Interestingly in this today's Shazam-enabled age, no other song produced more "wow, what is this, i need to get, what's it called" responses from friends and randoms alike literally every time I would play a venue. Notice the attention to detail, especially where the sparsely used sampes are concerned. So many little things come together to make this one stupefyingly incredible track, whether you're a fan of the genre or not. Fun in a can.

2. MADE TO STRAY - MOUNT KIMBIE

I've liked the british electronica duo for some time now. Made To Stray appears at first to be relatively simple and straightforward. Yet the more you listen to it, the more the build-up feels excellently executed, the drum beat infectuous and the vocal culmination sublime. Please sir, can I have some more?

3. BEING HER SHADOW - GROUPER

Liz Harris' music is hauntingly beautiful. It's like a mysterious book that once you've opened you cannot put down. Being Her Shadow literally brought me to tears the first few times I heard it. Even today, after what must by now be at least a few hundred plays, I can let it wash over me and I'll still feel like I've been invited to be a part of something eerily special.

4. AFTERLIFE - ARCADE FIRE

In all honesty, I could have picked one of 3 or 4 tracks from their Reflektor LP, it's that good. In the end, I went with Afterlife because it superbly marries the slightly new poppy direction the band have taken with some of their older trademark sensibilities. Oh and I love the message too.

5. SLASHERR (FLUME EDIT) - RUSTIE

This track never fails to excite me and I simply cannot wait to check Flume out live at Coachella.

6. EASY EASY - KING KRULE

I just love this youngster's vocal timbre, his lyrics, his laid back style... so yeah, pretty much everything.

7. SAN FRANCISCO - FOXYGEN

I'm not going to lie, at first, I didn't fully appreciate this one. It's just a little too jolly. But all it took was for me to get to the pre-chorus and then the actual chorus itself and I hooked. It's catchy. So, so catchy.

8. ROYALS - LORDE

Oh iiiii get it: go against the grain enough, go counter to what everyone else may be lauding and flaunting around in everyone's face, and do it with enough style and panache that you're bound to strike a chord with a lot of people. Lorde underpromises and overdelivers with this.

9. LUCID DREAMS - MAT ZO

Is it commercial? Well, yes. But somehow it isn't cheesy. Or at least, not too cheesy. And the build-up and eventual drop are fun fun fun.

10. JUST WHAT I AM - KID CUDI

I don't smoke. But if I did, this is what I'd smoke to, riding shotgun in an old convertible lincoln continental. Yeah.

11. PARALLEL JALEBI - FOUR TET

Love how he works the vocal sample. Love it I tells ya.

12. HELP ME LOSE MY MIND - DISCLOSURE feat. LONDON GRAMMAR

This is just instantaneously uplifting in a very moody, almost melancholic kind of way. Is that a contradiction? Yeah, but who cares.

13. I'M CLOSING IN - OBITS

I can't wait to play this song whenever I finally get round to spinning some tunes in my favorite heavies bar on the Greek island of Antiparos. You could even say that... I-ee-I-ee-I-ee-I'm... closin'...... iiiiiiiin!

14. ALL THAT MATTERS - GIRAFFAGE

Smooth yet to the point and all with the signature Giraffage vibe that we've grown to love. Nice.

15. BLIZZARD - KAVINSKY

Is there anyone cooler than Kavinsky? Not just musically. Like, in overall awesome coolness. No.

16. WE WERE IN LOVE - TA-KU

Ta-ku is a big It's Fluffy favorite, it must be said. The whole Songs To Break Up To release is worth checking out and this is out pick of the bunch.

17. REZ (BASSNECTAR REMIX) - UNDERWORLD

Underworld = Cool late 90's british electro. Bassnectar = 2010's dubstep for the masses. Put them together, turn the volume up to 11 and see what happens. Oh and perhaps you should also securely secure any fragile living room items near your speakers.

18. PRIMATIVE PEOPLE (TALE OF US REMIX) - MANO LE TOUGH

OOOOh. Yes. Spooky dance vibes is where this is at.

19. IS THIS HOW YOU FEEL - THE PREATURES

Some catchy ol' fashioned pop-rock for the win here. Feelin' it.

20. BLURRED LINES - ROBIN THICKE feat. PHARRELL WILLIAMS

Ok so by now hopefully you've realised that Fluffy isn't really about the mainstream. If this were a list of fluffiest radio-friendly pop songs, this one might be right at the top alongside Daft Punk's song about a mystic phoenix coming to life. On the other hand Fluffy is grown up enough to acknowledge something good when it happens, no matter how much it may have been overplayed or how much fuss was made about the video. And well we kinda love Pharrell's falsetto contributions.

21. HANG ON TO LIFE - ARIEL PINK, JORGE ELBRECHT

You screwed the pooch now face it. Can't seem to get this line out of my head, it's machine washer-style spinning around my mind incessantly. Maybe I should seek help.

22. DROPLA - YOUTH LAGOON

You will never die, you will never die, you will never die, you will never die, you will never die, you will never die, you will never die. Thank you almighty Trevor Powers (this pun was, sadly, intended).

23. THE WAY - FRIENDS

I kinda liked I'm His Girl when it came out in 2012. And I'm a huge Blood Orange fan. On this I'm really digging the Purple Rain vibe...

24. LATCH - DISCLOSURE

I felt compelled to add this to the list even though we've already got a Disclosure tune in here... Listen to it and feel compelled yourself.

25. SCALA - AGORIA

I just can't help but bob my head every time i hear this.

26. SHUT UP - SAVAGES

Just in case you're weren't totally sure that punk is alive and kicking, these four gals will set you straight. The whole LP is a must if you're into the genre.

27. INVISIBLE GIVING -  MARIAM THE BELIEVER

Despite evidence to the contrary, not to mention our rather unambiguous name, we love dark music just as much as anything else, if not more. Mariam's offering is certainly that at first.  But listen to this carefully on your headphones and you'll see that it has many dimensions. This one is a keeper.

28. GO WITH IT - TOKIMONSTA, MNDR

Well if a site called IT'S FLUFFY can't talk about an act named after the korean word for rabbit, who can? Exactly. Jennifer Lee's collaboration with electronic duo MNDR yielded this little gem. Love it to little fluffy bits. Who does her voice remind me of... Sky Ferreira? Charli XCX? Hmmm....

29. STARWIN - BOYS NOIZE

With this release the Berliners make me nostalgic for Homework-era Daft Punk. Let's listen to it One More Time.

30. GET LUCKY - DAFT PUNK feat PHARRELL WILLIAMS

I very seriously toyed with the idea of going with something else from Random Access Memories. Like maybe Doin' It Right or Moroder. But, well... you know, Get Lucky WAS the strongest track of the LP even if it was overplayed ad nauseam. And even if the lyrics are very low caliber and low quality, and even if this is far, faaaaar, FAR detached from what made me love Daft Punk in the first place, this was still an important highlight for the year. The insanely effective marketing didn't do it any harm either.

31. LUNGFUL - DOUGLAS DARE

The 22 year old London-based singer-songwriter is destined for some great things if carries on like this. All four track on the EP are great, but this one is simply so jaw-droppingly emotive, it's difficult the think about anything else for quite a while after you've been exposed to its sound waves.

32. YOU ARE EVERYWHERE - D/R/U/G/S

Cal and George's music is that euphoric blend of dance music that never fails to lift me up. I'm trying to find the instrumental version as I'm pretty sure that would also bring the house down.

33. MAN OF THE YEAR - SCHOOLBOY Q

I've been following Schoolboy Q ever since I started following Kendrick Lamar and while his progression hasn't been as stellar, he's certainly taking some serious strides, especially with this track. Now BOUNCE.

34. BRUANE BRENN - KVELERTAK

I love heavy riffs probably a lot more than the average person. So it's disappointing that there's nothing even coming close to resembling metal in this list. UNTIL NOW THAT IS.

35. GAS PEDAL (SALVA REMIX) - SAGE THE GEMINI & IMASU!

For the caged animal inside you, freedom is served.

36. HOLD ON WE'RE GOING HOME - DRAKE

Not his biggest fan but this is cool nevertheless.

37. R U MINE? - ARCTIC MONKEYS

I am yours sincerely.

38. RINGO - JORIS VOORN

Close your eyes and let Joris take you on a journey through the ever fluctuating landscapes of your imagination.

39. AFTER DAWN - LETHERETTE

I really enjoy how this British duo manage to make me feel like I'm still in late 90's electro-funk hayday heaven.

40. BRINGING YOU DOWN - JONAS RATHSMAN

Well I couldn't exactly leave this out given how I played it at practically every single housey dj-set I was a part of in 2013.

41. RETROGRADE - JAMES BLAKE

I liked the debut album, and I very much liked his live performance at Primavera Sound 2013 in Barcelona, so this wasn't a very difficult choice. Makes you want to sing/hum along don't it?

42. PORCHLIGHT AND ROCKING CHAIRS (KINK REMIX) - JIMPSTER

I could easily see this warming a few early evening floors up...

43. BAD KINGDOM - MODERAT

I really dig Modeselektor (Berlin is fantastic) and when they joined forces with Appart to come up with this, well I had to take note. I duly noted insane production coupled with some interesting vox.

44. SONG FOR ZULA - PHOSPHORESCENT

Makes you feel all warm and mushy inside.

45. GUNSHOTTA - MACHINEDRUM

It's been quite a while since I've had something approaching DnB my way, mainly cos the genre has really faded over the past decade or so. This remains ambient in a kind of LTJ Bukem meets Asian Dub Foundation way, and I likes it.

46. BACK TO THE MIDDLE - DEERHUNTER

It's all accidental / Your love is such a sick sick game.

47. WIDE OPEN - B.O.B.

Short but oh-so-sweet, I can have this on repeat no problem.

48. BLIZZARD - FAUVE

Ok so maybe it helps to understand french if you want to really appreciate this one. As fate would have, it do and I love the message almost as much as I love the video

49. SAN FRANCISCO (GIRAFFAGE REMIX) - BEGUN

True Giraffage style transportation in this remix.

50. GIMME - BECK

Not as much of a loser as he was leading us to believe the cheeky lil rascal.

51. SACRILEGE - YEAH YEAH YEAHS

Karen O - the epitome of cool.
